My research will explore the role of paid support workers in realising the ambitions of public policy relating to learning disability. In particular it will examine whether the relationships and interactions between paid support workers and the people they support result in improved outcomes and whether these outcomes are in line with the aspirations of public policy. Drawing on a review of literature, participant observation and interviews with paid support workers and adults with learning disabilities in residential care, I will examine whether the views and recommendations set out in research and policy fit with perceptions and practice on the ground. The aim of this research is to support future alignment of learning disability policy and practice in order to improve outcomes for people with learning disabilities.
