Cambridge Public Health

Cambridge Public Health is pleased to announce the launch of Streets in the Sky, a new podcast series exploring the public health consequences of modern housing developments around the world.

Across three episodes, Streets in the Sky brings together academics, architects, public health specialists, and policymakers to examine how modern approaches to housing, when misaligned with local concepts of home, can give rise to serious health and social challenges. As global warming continues to render many living environments unsafe, the stakes for sustainable, health-promoting housing have never been higher.

The first episode focuses on the Doddington Estate in London, investigating how the replacement of traditional homes with post-war tower blocks has affected residents' health and well-being. In the second episode, we travel to Mumbai, where slum rehabilitation efforts mirror mistakes made in post-war Britain, with similarly concerning public health outcomes. The series concludes with expert perspectives on how future housing must adapt — sustainably and equitably — to avoid exacerbating public health crises in the years to come.

By offering insights from a range of fields, Streets in the Sky highlights the urgent need to place public health at the centre of housing policy and urban development.
