The Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSHHealthcare in Conflict Cambridge research network (HCiCC) is proud to announce its official launch event, featuring a mapping and networking session on Thursday 30 November 2023 from 6 - 8pm at the Lucia Windsor Room, Newnham College. The event will be opened by Dr Barbara Blacklaws, Vice Principal of Newnham College.

About the HCiCC network:

The HCiCC network is an interdisciplinary research and practitioner network examining healthcare within conflict settings. The ambition of the network is to identify researchers, academics, practitioners and students engaged in the area of studying and working in conflict settings and to foster collaboration among the different fields.

The co-convenors of this network are Dr Charlotte Hammer, (Everett Butterfield Fellow) and Dr Saleyha Ahsan (PhD student, International Health Systems). The network's faculty advisors are Professor Caroline Trotter (Professor of Global Health, Department of Veterinary Medicine) and Dr Tom Bashford (Associate Professor in International Health Systems, Department of Engineering).

Event highlights:

  • Practitioner insights: The mapping event will host four speakers with vast practitioner experience across the worlds of medicine, law, media and film and the military within a conflict setting, which we hope will reinforce to all attending researchers the various relevant disciplines that practise in times of war and who are a crucial part of the narrative in this field.
  • Dorothy Byrne, President of Murray Edwards, and former head of News and Current Affairs will speak about her experiences of commissioning films set in conflict settings examing healthcare including Syria. She will share the challenges of creating such a film, the risks involved and why she felt it was important that documentary formed part of this narrative.
  • Networking and ongoing mapping: An opportunity to connect with professionals and scholars interested in healthcare in conflict
